Robin Hood 2011 Moments

#10 - Year end fundraising and the $20 Million matching challenge.

In the final hours of 2011, we reflect upon that great generosity of all our donors who have joined us in the battle against poverty this year.

There is still a chance to make a tax-deductible donation. As always, a 100 percent of every dollar donated goes directly to poverty-fighting programs. And any donations that come in before the end of the day, will be matched! Click here to donate: http://bit.ly/HelpRH

Thank you all for a great 2011.  We have our arrow aimed at 2012 – see you then!

Robin Hood 2011 Moments:

#9 - Inspiring words from Paul Tudor Jones II

One of Robin Hood’s founders, and current board member, Paul Tudor Jones II, closed the 2011 Heroes breakfast with comments on the increasing challenges faced by New Yorkers in need.

“I’m going to care more than I ever cared,” he said. “I’m going to dig deeper.  I’m going to give more of my time, my money and my know-how than I ever have and than I ever thought was possible.”

Any donations given by the end of 2011 will be matched. Give what you can: http://bit.ly/HelpRH

#8 - A touching Heroes Breakfast

This year’s Heroes Breakfast was memorable because of the inspiring stories told by people who overcame obstacles, like Mutiya Vision.  She shared how Women in Need changed her life by providing shelter for her family as a girl and allowed her to grow up into the marvelous writer and woman we saw that morning.

#7 - Best birthday party ever

To cap off an epic weekend of concerts, Robin Hood joined Lady Gaga, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and more to wish Sting a Happy 60th Birthday. He gave us the presents though, with an awesome concert to benefit our organization.

#6 - The youngest poverty fighters making a difference in New York City

Even the youngest New Yorkers can be poverty fighters.  When school is out for the summer, Camp Robin Hood helps teens continue their education.  Each summer teens see what Robin Hood does first-hand, by learning about poverty, interacting with our grantees and directly volunteering to fight poverty head-on.  The 2011 campers worked with people who had received job training from The Doe Fund, a Robin Hood-funded program.  Camp Robin Hood alumni are part of the Teen Council that meets monthly to learn about grantmaking and continue serving our community.

#5 - Getting into the holiday spirit with families in need

We love the holidays at Robin Hood because everyone rallies together to spread joy to those in need.  Staff and supporters visited Women In Need, an organization that offers transitional housing and support services to women and their families.  Building gingerbread houses and touring the facility were just a few ways that Robin Hood got in the holiday spirit.

#4 - The Concert 4 NYC to raise money and awareness for the 1.8 million New Yorkers living in poverty.

On September 30th, New York glowed Robin Hood green at the Concert 4 NYC.  The Black Eyed Peas and 60,000 people rocked out on the Great Lawn to fight poverty in New York City. The Concert 4 NYC made history in many ways – including the first backstage chat and concert streamed via Hangout on Google +!  Will.i.am and Executive Director David Saltzman hung out before the show with people from all over the world.

#3 - Lady Gaga partners with Robin Hood to give $1 Million to support NYC teens

One million fans and poverty-fighters voted via Facebook to help LGBTQ teens living in poverty. The mother monster herself, Lady Gaga, presents a check to SCO Family of Services for $500,000. The remaining funds were distributed to Lawyers for Children, Safe Horizon, and The Door, who all support homeless youth.

#2 - Kicking off the Veterans Initiative

America’s brave men and women in the armed forces joined us at our annual benefit to draw attention to the astounding number of military personnel living in poverty in New York City. The benefit kicked off our Veterans Initiative which aims to address the unique needs of veterans living in poverty.
