Chrissy DeForrest, model and volunteer, has long been Robin Hood to low-income New Yorkers. For the second year in a row, she’s gotten her grandmother, Stella Turowski, involved.
My grandmom loves to crochet and when she mentioned she was looking for a project to fill her free time, I spoke to her about Robin Hood and the work they do for New Yorkers in need. That was all she needed to hear. She worked for a few months creating all different size blankets for kids and families that could use the blankets in the upcoming winter months. When she first came to the United States from Poland, she arrived via boat to NY’s Staten Island in 1934. I think it’s so beautiful to tie her back to the city that first welcomed her as a little girl and for her to be able to give back to that community in her own way.
Stella and Chrissy, thank you both for bringing joy to families this holiday season. We’re glad to have you on our side in the fight against poverty in New York City.
